The world is going mad for the iPad 2. While analysts predicted sales of between 350,000 and 400,000 in the device’s opening weekend, actual volumes were closer to 1 million and there seems to be no sign of demand slowing down. Around the world, buyers are getting into a frenzy to snap up the devices. Huge queues in London led to the device being sold out almost immediately and the device sold out within 4 hours of going on sale in Beijing. But while sales of the iPad 2 are beating all predictions, rumours about the iPad 3 are already starting to surface online. The big news at the moment is that the iPad 3 will support a 3D display. Broken by the RCR Wireless website, the information is based on a leak from Hollywood that suggests that studio executives are now working themselves into a frenzy to plan for and produce 3D content in time for the launch of the third generation of Apple’s groundbreaking tablet device. While this might initially have been dismissed as idle gossip (the fact that this is the iPad 3 seems a little too convenient) the information has been further supported by leaked information from Apple’s manufacturer in Taiwan (Foxconn or Hon Hai manufacturing) that seems to confirm that the next device will indeed be 3D compatible. Realistically, this is no real surprise, with most of Apple’s major competitors playing with the same idea. RIM’s business-focused Playbook tablet will support 3D video but only when connected to a 3D television via HDMI and when supported by 3D glasses. RIM is said to be strongly considering the idea that the next generation of Playbook could/would be entirely 3D supportive, reflecting the trend in the entertainment industry for 3D media. Nintendo’s 3DS console already supports glassless 3D viewing and Apple’s success in the handheld gaming market could make this an appealingly competitive move. Some industry insiders were surprised that iPad 2 failed to bring across the retina display technology from the iPhone 4, prompting speculation that something ‘big’ would be coming for the iPad 3. Apple was recently granted a patent for a ‘three-dimensional display system’ so it seems highly likely that this development will become more than just a rumour. Clearly, this will remain a rumour for some time, with no release date as yet confirmed by Apple. Rumours that the third device could come out in September 2011 seem unlikely to be true but with interest in the iPad 3 already so high, it’s hard to see how Apple will be able to hold out for another year before relaunching the device.
